EASTER CAMP   2^nd to 6^th April, 2012.

This year we are again running an action packed adventure programme.  We deliver our programmes to the highest safety standard by  qualified and experienced instructors.  Fun and excitement are guaranteed while acquiring new skills and friendships.

Age 7 – 14 yrs

Activities include: – Surfing,   Canadian

Canoeing, Kayaking, Archery, Indoor

Rockclimbing , Orienteering and indoor games.

TRANSPORT

Local transport provided free of charge each day to pick up and drop off at selected points in the locality. 

Each day the children experience a different activity.    The camp starts at 10.00 a.m. and finishes at 3 p.m.

A working knowledge of the Irish language is desirable.

Why not take a look at our rates for 2012.  We are now taking bookings and have a few spaces available in May and June.  This year we are refurbishing the accommodation.  We are upgrading the bedrooms and adding on en-suite facilities.  We are also adding on a new wing and will be able to take larger groups.

The Outdoor Recreation PLC Course run at the Achill Outdoor Education Centre commenced on the 13th September, 2011.  The group are all very enthusiastic and mad to get going.  The course consists of eight modules -

Hillwalking Proficiency (Level 5), Work Experience Level 5, Communications Level 5, Outdoor Leadership and Safety Level 5, Kayaking Skills (Level 4), Windsurfing Level 5, Outdoor Recreation Level 5 and Occupational First Aid Level 5.

All the participants on the course are having a great time and progressing well.  They are ready for Mountain Skills Training next week. 

Last year almost  all the students continued on to further their studies in the outdoors either with the GMIT in Castlebar or with another College.

Indoor activities for all the family.  Why not try some Archery, Indoor Rockclimbing and  Team Games.  We have an indoor facility  which is an alternative in  bad weather.  Children can enjoy activities in the safety, comfort and the warmth of our centre with our qualified staff.  On days when the weather is blowing a hurricane and it is not safe to do activities outdoors the children are safe indoors and enjoy  a morning or afternoon with Archery competitions, Bouldering Sessions, Team Tasks and sporting activities such as Volleyball, Uni-hoc and Badminton.

We are running a Post Leaving Cert. Course, FETAC Level 5, at the Achill Outdoor Education Centre and Colaiste Pobail Acla from September 2011 to May 2012.

This one year full time course is a practical introduction to outdoor activities.  The course aims to provide expert tuition in a range of outdoor activities, leading participants to gain knowledge and skills which can later be used in the outdoor education industry.

Hillwalking Proficiency

Kayaking

First Aid

Work Experience

Entry Requirements are Leaving Certificate (Leaving Cert. applied) level of education or Equivalent.

Applications from mature students are also welcome.  Interviews are held in late August/early September.

AWARDING BODY

Successful completion of this course will lead participants to a FETAC Level 5 award in Outdoor Recreation.

OPPORTUNITIES

The course offers participants the chance to progress on to employment in the outdoor education industry.  Alternatively, FETAC Level 5 course award holders may progress to further study through the Higher Education Link Scheme.

We are running another camp for local children and their friends from the 15th to 19th August.  This camp has been very popular with local children and has been full on each occasion it has run. 

The children are collected from a central location in their village in the morning and dropped back again in the evening.  The camp is very good value – only €80.00 for the full week. 

Over the course of the week the children are introduced to a variety of activities – Surfing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Sailing, Indoor Rockclimbing, Archery and Games.  The Camp runs in all weather as we have an indoor facility for activities.

Achill Outdoor Education Centre Summer Camp 

Commenced Monday 11^th July and will run every Monday to Friday until the end of August. 

Morning Camp              10.0 0 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Afternoon Camp             2 p.m. – 5 p.m.

 Special  Camp  For Local Achill,  Mulranny and  Corraun Children and  their friends also ran this week and was  a great success.  We had a large turn out and will run it again in August.
